Definition
Number (or parts thereof) assigned to a product during classification.
Use
The customs observation of cross-border goods movement is based on numbers from a systematically structured nomenclature of goods, whose details are defined by the customs authorities or offices. All products can be identified uniquely through assignment to these numbers within the classification process. Part of the number describes the type of product involved, while other parts of the number contain encoded information, such as import/export restrictions, tariff quotas, and customs duty rates or refer to preference rules.
The first six places of these numbers are identical internationally and are recorded in the Harmonized System (HS) for the unambiguous identification of products. The possible other places in these numbers were added by the customs union or country in addition to the six places of the HS, for further detail or to record country-specific information. Each number or part thereof has a specific task, dependent on the process.
