Definition
Key that specifies how costing is carried out and valuated
Use
Depending on the object that is to be costed, costing can be carried out as either unit or product costing.
You create a cost estimate with or without a quantity structure to calculate the costs for manufacturing a material.
When you use a quantity structure for costing, the costing variant determines:
- Which dates apply to the cost estimate itself and to canceling and valuating the quantity structure
- How the bills of materials and task lists are selected to set up the quantity structure
- Which prices are selected to valuate the quantity structure
- How the overhead rates are calculated
You create unit costing to calculate the planned costs for:
- Materials (costing without quantity structure)
- Materials (additive cost estimate)
- Production orders in Controlling
- Internal orders
- WBS elements
- Base planning objects
- Cost object IDs
- Sales documents
In unit costing, the costing variant determines:
- Which prices are selected to valuate the individual costing items
- How overhead rates are calculated
Costing variants are also used to calculate the costs for:
- Production orders
- Networks
- Maintenance orders
- Process orders
- Sales document items
- Appropriation requests
- Ad-hoc cost estimates

- Costing type
- Valuation variant
- Date control (with and without a quantity structure in the cost estimate)
- Quantity structure controls (in product costing)
- Transfer control (in product costing)
