Definition

The overhead key is used to determine an overhead rate for an individual order or material.

Use

Procedure

Orders, cost object IDs, and base planning objects: To calculate an overhead rate using the overhead key, you must:

  • Assign a costing sheet to your order, cost object ID, or base planning object
  • Enter overheads on the sheet that use the "Overhead Key" field

Product costing, production orders, series orders, and process orders: To calculate an overhead rate using the overhead key, you must:

  • Assign a costing sheet to the order or the valuation variant for costing
  • Enter overheads on the sheet that use the "Overhead Key" field
  • Assign the overhead key to an overhead group
  • Enter the overhead group in the material master record of the material to be produced

Examples

The amount of your overheads depends on the plant and the overhead key. You want to specify that the overhead is to depend primarily on the overhead key. If no overhead key is maintained for the material or order, the overhead should be calculated on the basis of the plant.

You therefore define a costing sheet that refers to two condition tables. In the first table, the overhead amount depends on the overhead key. In the second table, the overhead amount depends on the plant. By specifying the access sequence, you define which conditions have priority and when.

Dependencies

The overhead key is also used as a selection criterion for determining templates for process cost allocation. If a template is assigned to an overhead key and costing sheet of an order, process costs are calculated for the order.

If you change the overhead key or costing sheet, the system may use a different template.
