Use

The system requires various control parameters in order to use image data in the respective applications. To maintain flexibility in the control of image data in the various application areas/transactions, the image data parameters are grouped together under object types. You can assign a specific object type to a transaction.

The system differentiates between three types of images:

  • Fullscreen images:
    • Server path:
Enter the path to the image data server in the following format:
      file://\\dir1\dir2\dir3\dir\_
    • Width:
      Width in columns
    • Height:
      Height in rows
    • File type:
      JPG -     Image data format
      BMP -    Image data format
      GIF -     Image data format
  • Thumbnails:
    • Server path:
Enter the path to the image data server in the following format:
      file://\\dir1\dir2\dir3\dir\_
    • File type:
      JPG -     Image data format
      BMP -    Image data format
      GIF -     Image data format
  • Series images
    • Server path:
Enter the path to the image data server in the following format:
      file://\\dir1\dir2\dir3\dir\_
    • File type:
      JPG -    Image data format
      BMP -    Image data format
      GIF -    Image data format
    • Max. images:
Defines the maximum number of series images that will be displayed in the generic structure of the URLs.
When constructing the URLs for series images, the system forms the corresponding file names using an index, which starts with 00 and counts consecutively, to find the corresponding image file in the server path. The system terminates the search or increment of the index when this maximum value is reached - that is, the last image file has an index of
      (maximum value) - 1.
If the system does not find any image files for the determined index, it resumes the search with the next index. In this case, the maximum number of displayable images is reduced by the number of image files that were not found, which means the system does not continue the search for image files until the specified maximum value is reached.
If you choose the Read from Table option for URL determination, this parameter has no effect. Instead, the system reads all the URLs saved for an object (such as a material) and displays the images. The setting is only used for generic determination of the URL, to keep the number of searches to a sensible number for performance reasons.
    • Separator:
Separator for series images (for example: #,%,&,#)

You can activate/deactivate the following pushbuttons for the image data display:

  • Thumbnail
  • Series images
  • Fullscreen image
  • Subobjects
  • HTML viewer

The following control parameters are available:

  • Check URLs:
Once the system has formed the URL generically or read it from the master data table for displaying image data, it checks whether it can read a matching image file for the URL.
If you do not set the flag and all the image files exist, this parameter has no effect. If one or more of the image files are missing, however, the system will display a blank image.
When you set the flag, the system detects missing image files and filters them out in advance, to avoid displaying broken links.
  • Build URLs:
For performance reasons, you should not set this flag if a large number of series images exist, or if you have generic materials with many variant images.
If you do not set the flag, the system builds the URLs on demand when the corresponding images are displayed.
  • Image module:
You can choose from the following three display forms:
    • Pushbuttons only
The image module only displays the pushbuttons that display the actual image data. You can display the fullscreen image, an HTML page, and - for generic materials - the image information for the variants.
If you want to prevent displaying the image directly (for performance reasons, for example), use this setting.
    • Thumbnail with pushbuttons
The image module displays the pushbuttons described above. It also displays a thumbnail, in addition to the pushbuttons.
    • SAP logo with pushbuttons
For test purposes, you can display the SAP logo as a default thumbnail. Otherwise, this image module provides the same functions as the previous image module.
  • Object ID
Controls the display format that is used to include the object ID in the generic formation of the URL with the file name.
The object IDs can have an internal and an external display format. For example, you can use a strictly numeric material number with leading zeros internally, and without leading zeros externally.
The system uses the object ID to construct the file name for the underlying image data file. The file name can contain the object ID in either internal or external format.
  • URL determination
Several different procedures are available for determining the URL:
    • Generic:
The system forms the URL from the server path, the object ID (the material number, for example), and the file type. For series images, it supplements the object ID with a sequential index and (possibly) a separator.
    • Read from table:
The system determines the URLs using the master data tables for displaying image data. You can use a custom migration program to fill these tables. Please note that the standard system does not provide such migration tools.
    • Read from table first, then generic:
The system uses a combination of the above two procedures to determine the URL. A URL in the master data tables for displaying image data takes priority over generic determination.
    • Read from table first, then generic: Save change:
This procedure is identical to the previous procedure, with the exception
    • that you can also assign the URL of an image file object-specifically through a file import. The system then saves this URL in the master data tables for displaying image data and it is available the next time the image is displayed.
Save the image files on a server that all users can access. Image files that are saved on local PCs are only available to the respective PC user.

You can define the following default settings:

  • Thumbnail
This image is displayed when no other image has been saved.
  • Fullscreen image
This image is displayed when no other image has been saved.
  • HTML page
The default URL is entered here in the format http://www.sap.com; it appears when the HTML viewer is started.
