A position is the smallest unit within the financial subledger. Valuations are carried out and derived flows are generated based on position. Differentiation terms determine how the positions are shown.
The differentiation terms are fixed for loans, transactions and listed options and futures. For security positions, some differentiation terms are fixed and you can define others in this IMG activity.

Standard settings
You can create a differentiation for securities which contains the securities account as an additional differentiation term. In this case a securities position is determined by the following crtieria:
- Valuation area
- Accounting code
- ID number
- Securities account
You can set these differentiation rules for all valuation areas and accounting codes. You can, however, define different differentiation rules for each valuation area or accounting code.
Activities
- First, define a differentiation.
- Save the entries.
- Assign the differentiation term.
- Save the entries.
- Now you must assign the differentiation for each valuation area and/or Accounting code.
- Save the entries.
