In this step, you define your matrix guidelines. A matrix is a type of guideline that uses multiple employee attributes and customer and organization-specific attributes to determine the guideline used in compensation administration.

You can create a matrix with one, two or three dimensions.

Example

Your organization's compensation policy uses the employees' performance results and compa-ratio to determine the calculation rule or value used to administer the compensation adjustment to the employee.

In this case, you need to define a two-dimensional matrix guideline.

Requirements

You have defined calculation variants, methods for matrix dimensions and dimensions.

Activities

Defining a matrix involves the following stages:

  • First, you have to create a matrix
  • Then, you have to define the segments
Segments represent the position along the dimension axis, that is the coordinate values of the axis
  • Finally, you have to maintain the values

To define a two-dimension matrix based on performance and compa-ratio, proceed as follows:

  1. Define your work area by entering your compensation area
  2. Choose Create and enter the following data in the Matrix tabstrip:
    1. Four-character matrix ID
    2. Name
    3. Validity period
  3. On the Dimension tabstrip, enter performance and compa-ratio as the dimensions
  4. On the Entry values tabstip, determine which fields you want to be able to maintain, when you maintain the matrix values and whether the values are to be expressed as an amount, a percentage or a number.

Note

If you select Default, an amount/percentage/number will be defaulted if you apply the guidelines when you perform compensation administration.

  1. Choose a message type

Note

The message type determines whether the system displays an error or a warning or no message if you fall short or exceed the minimum and maximum when you are performing compensation administration.

  1. Select a calculation variant on the corresponding tabstrip

Note

There are four calculation variants that you can choose:

  • Adj. by difference adjusts the compensation component by a percentage or an amount
  • Absolute amount adjusts the compensation component to an absolute amount
  • Total amount adjustment adjusts the total amount of an employee's compensation component without you having to specify the amount by which the component is adjusted.
  • Other uses a user exit

  1. Save your entries

You now need to define segments for your dimensions.

  1. Double click on one of the dimensions and maintain the relevant data.

Note

The system treats the minimum value that you enter as inclusive, in otherwords included in the range of the segment. It treats the maximum value as exclusive, in other words not included in the range of the segment.

Example

For this example, the data may look something like this:

Dimension    Segment

Perrformance    Poor

    Satisfactory

    Good

    Very good

    Excellent

Compa-ratio    Low

    Average

    High

  1. To save your entries, choose Save matrix

You now need to maintain the values for your matrix

  1. Choose Edit => Maintain matrix val

Note

If you are creating a three-dimensional matrix, a tabstrip is used to represent the third dimension. A simple table is used to represent a two-dimensional matrix.

  1. Enter a default, minimum and maximum amount per permitation

Example

For this example, the data may look something like this:

Compa-ratio    Performance    Default    Minimum    Maximum

Low    Poor    150,00    100,00    200,00

Low    Satisfactory    250,00    200,00    300,00

Low    Good    350,00    300,00    400,00

Low    Very good    450,00    400,00    500,00

Low    Excellent    550,00    500,00    600,00

Average    Poor    200,00    100,00    300,00

...    ...    ...    ...    ...

Note

What values you enter will depend on the calculation variant selected. If you selected Difference, the amounts entered here will be the amount by which the employee's salary, etc. is increased.

  1. Save your entries

Matrix Copy Function

  • If you copy a matrix and change the matrix ID, the system creates a new matrix that has the same dimensions, segments and values
  • If you copy a matrix and change the validity period, the system delimits the matrix that you copied
  • If you copy a matrix and change a dimension, the system only copies some of the segments and does not copy any of the values as they would no longer make sense.

Matrix Delete Function

  • If you delete a matrix, the systems deletes everything in that period of time

Matrix Transport Function
If you want to transport your matrix guidelines from your test system to your productive system, for example, you have to transport them manually. To do this:

  1. Select the matrix you want to transport and choose Matrix => Transport
  2. Enter the name of the request in the Enter change request dialog box and choose Continue
  3. Choose Tools => ABAP Workbench => Utilities => Maintenance => Workbench organizer and release your transport requests in the usual manner.

Further notes

For additional information on the Workbench Organizer, refer to the section BC Change and Transport Organizer under BC - Basis Components in the R/3 Library.
