If you choose to use the Non-resident Alien 1042S payroll functionality to default the amounts specified in the tax treaty as exemption amounts for payroll process, please follow following steps. Otherwise, you can skip following configurations.

The relationship between the IRS income code and the tax treaty group (which is used on Form 8233) is as follows:

When an infotype Tax treaty (0556) is created for this employee you will be able to select in infotype 0556 via the F4 help

  • the Tax Treaty country
  • the Tax Treaty group and
  • the exempt amount

The defaulted tax treaty exempt amount cannot be changed.

For the subtype 1001 (Non-Compensatory) the Tax Treaty country is chosen and the exempt amount for Non-Compensatory payments is defaulted into the infotype. The amounts transferred form the maintained tax treaty table cannot be changed as they are defined via the Tax treaty. It is required that you maintain all tax treaty entries you are going to use.

You have to first change the system switch in table T77S0, then activate the screen 2310 in table T588M and specify the corresponding entries in feature for infotype 0556 (P0556).

Example

A student from Austria on an F-1 Visa is doing research and receives compensatory payments. On his form 8233 he claimed a tax treaty goup of 4 ( Foreign Researcher which corresponds to the IRS 1042-S Income code 17).

You would create for example the following data in the view T5UPBS13 (View table for tax treaty):

Standard settings

The standard SAP delivery supports the manual entry of the tax treaty data in infotype Tax Treaty.

Recommendation

Maintain the tax treaty information for all the countries you are dealing with.

Requirements

You have decided to use the tax treaty table to default the exempt amounts into the infotype 0556. Changes of the Amounts on an individual basis are not allowed.

Activities

  1. Set up the Tax treaty information.
  2. Change system table T77S0 settting to use tax treaty table.
  3. Verify the Infotype screen control for infotype 0556. If you use the Tax treaty table option you have to check screen 2310.
  4. Maintain screen control feature P0556. You have to use screen 2310.
