In this step, you review and amend the payroll constants that will be used in your system to levy state and federal taxes upon non-resident aliens during the payroll process.
Example
Examples of typical payroll constants include:
- NFED0 - Federal 1042-S tax rate, 0%
- NFED1 - Federal 1042-S tax rate, 14%
- NFED3 - Federal 1042-S tax rate, 30%
- NMA - State tax rate, Massachusetts
- NNC02 - State tax rate, North Carolina
- NOH98 - State tax rate, Ohio
Standard settings
In the standard system, all payroll constants are a maximum of five characters in length. Furthermore, payroll constants that deal with non-resident alien taxation begin with the letter N.
As delivered, the standard system features three pre-configured payroll constants that can be used to levy federal taxes upon non-resident aliens. The first constant, NFED0, levies a federal tax of 0% on non-resident aliens. The second and third constants, NFED1 and NFED3, levy federal taxes on non-resident aliens at rates of 14% and 30%, respectively.
Recommendation
For the purpose of federal taxes, we recommend that you retain and use the pre-delivered payroll constants described above. However, for the purpose of state taxes, we recommend that you configure your own payroll constants and review them on an annual basis.
If a state tax rate has changed in the past year, then we recommend that you delimit, rather than delete, the corresponding payroll constant. Given their flexible naming convention, new constants can be named to describe constants by state (NMA), state and number in a series (NNC02), or state and taxation year (NOH98).
Activities
- Execute this IMG step.

- Delimit the start and end dates of the constant, and assign it a value.
- Repeat steps 4. and 5. for each new payroll constant until all constants have been configured.
- Save any changes you have made, and exit the transaction.
