In this step, you define number ranges for your PD objects. You also specify the type of number assignment used. You must ensure that every object is assigned a unique number.

The following options are available:

  • Internal number assignment

In this case, the SAP System assigns numbers. The number ranges are then flagged with the letters "IN".

  • External number assignment

In this case, system users assign numbers. The number ranges are then flagged with the letters "EX".

You can define your own number ranges (subgroups) for specific plan versions (if number assignment is not performed across all plan versions) and specific object types. The names of the subgroups are defined in such a way that the first 2 characters give further details of the plan version, and the last 2 characters give further details of the object type. The way in which the subgroups are set up depends on whether or not number assignment is performed across plan versions.

Example

Number assignment for plan version 10 / object type S: subgroup 10S

Standard settings

The "$$$$" entry in the "Subgroup" field stands for all number ranges not specified explicitly. Do not delete this entry.

Recommendation

Since you can use the matchcode to search for objects, you do not normally need to assign numbers that are meaningful.

SAP therefore recommends that you use internal number assignment.

Activities

  1. Enter the subgroup for which you want to set up number assignment.

The following entries are allowed if you do not assign numbers across plan versions:

    • $$$$ (plan version and object type generic)
    • PV$$ (plan version, object type generic)
    • PVOT (plan version, object type)

The following entry is not allowed here:

    • $$OT (plan version generic, object type)

The following entries are allowed if you not assign numbers across plan versions:

    • $$$$ (plan version and object type generic)
    • $$OT (plan version generic, object type)

The following entries are not allowed here:

    • PV$$ (plan version, object type generic)
    • PVOT (plan version, object type)

Choose Save. The system automatically creates an external number range (EX) and an internal number range (IN).

  2. On the next screen, enter the subgroup, and choose Change intervals.
  3. A screen appears where you can maintain number range intervals. Choose Insert interval.
  4. In the dialog box that appears, enter the indicator for the type of number assignment (EX or IN), and specify the lower and upper value for the range.

In the case of external number assignment, also select the "Ext" field.

  5. Choose Insert, and then choose Save.
