Use
In this step, you configure the payroll system to process sales tax on payments. This step includes five major activities, comprising two tax calculation rules, updating the schema, and wage type definition/maintenance.
Example
- Group Term Life Insurance - the employee pays the premium for this service with a payroll deduction. In this case, rule KST1 derives the portion of the premium which represents the sales tax to be remitted for the insurance premium. The sales tax portion is then stored in a separate wage type.
- Self-employed - self-employed persons must remit sales taxes on amounts received from their customers. Rule KST1 calculates the GST and other taxes due on these amounts and stores the tax amounts in a separate wage type.
- Taxable benefit - when an employee receives a taxable benefit, rule KST2 will derive the GST and other sales tax amounts on the taxable benefit, so that income tax on the benefit can be properly calculated.
Recommendation
The two rules included in this step, KST1 and KST2, derive sales taxes from payments. This function is only required if you need these sales tax values to be calcuated before FI/CO transfer takes place.

Activities
- Rule KST1 calculates GST and other sales taxes on payments for remittance purposes. Rule KST2 calculates the GST and other sales taxes on payments for income tax purposes. Maintain rules KST1 and KST2 as needed, to ensure accurate processing of your payments requiring sales tax calculation.
- After changing rules KST1 and KST2, remember also to update schema KAL0 accordingly . That is, replace KST1 and/or KST2, as they appear in KAL0, with your copied/changed rule names.
- Maintain the wage types which will represent your payments and/or the taxable portions of those payments, if you need these wage types for sales tax calculation in KST1/KST2.
- Maintain the processing classes and values for your wage types. Note: Rule KST1 determines sales tax for wage types in processing class 71. KST2 determines sales tax for wage types in processing class 72.
