In this IMG activity, you define the academic scales you need to rate the internal and external academic work of students.
Internal grades are the grades that your institution assigns to students who have have completed a module or program. External grades are the grades that external organizations (object type EO) assign to students who have completed the required academic work.
The system contains a system scale with a value range from 0.00 to 100,000.00, the lowest value being 0.00 and the highest 100,000.00. When you set up your own academic scales in the system, you define the relationship between these scales and the system scale. This relationship can be used to convert values from one scale to another.
When the relationship between scales is defined, the system can convert the grades a student received from an external institution to their equivalents on other academic scales.
In Campus Management, you can set up the following scale types:
- Quality scale
Example: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 or A, B, C, D, E, F
- Linear quantity scale
Example: 0 to 80
- Partially linear quantity scale
Example: 0 to 80 with intervals that refer to sections of the system scale
- Quantity scale (with conversion via a function module)
Example: A function module is used to convert a given scale to the system scale.
By defining a base value, you can convert the values of different academic scales to their equivalents on the system scale (linear quantity scale with a value range from 0.00 to 100,000.00). The base value is the system scale value which corresponds to the lowest value of the scale you are defining.
For quality scales, you must enter a scale ID and description, the scale type quality scale, the base value, and a sort order.
For quantity scales, you must additionally enter the highest and lowest values, the scale interval, and the function module to be used for scale conversion.
For both quality and quantity scales, you must define the scale values.
Example
Students applying for admission to your university must submit their final secondary school transcript. Before you can enter the transcript grades in the student master record, you have to define the academic scale on which the transcript is based. Academic scales are usually country-specific.
For secondary school transcripts, you require an academic scale that has a value range from 1 to 6, 1 being the highest and 6 the lowest value, and a value interval of 0.1. To map the grades of these transcripts in the system, you define the following academic scale:
Field Entry
Scale ID 0001
Scale description Secondary school grades
Scale type Linear quantity scale
Base value 30
Lowest value 6
Highest value 1
Scale interval 0.1
FM for scale conversion
Scale direction Highest -> Lowest
