Definition
If the length of the data that is to be encoded is not predefined (by a standard, for instance), or if it is limited by a delimiter, the length can also be defined as a component of the Application Identifier (AI). In such a case, the value determines how many characters will be added to the AI.
To specify the actual length of the encoded data, this value is first multiplied with the AI length-specification multiplication factor and then added to the AI length-specification addition factor.
Example
he AI lot number, which is defined in the EAN128 standard, is 23 and is increased by one character for length specification.
The bar code (233) 1233426 indicates that the length of the encoded data is 7 when the multiplication factor is 2 and the addition factor is 1 (3 * 2 + 1= 7). In other words, this means that 7 characters must follow the AI (233), and these 7 characters make up the lot number.
