Definition
Numerical port data, identification of the forwarding destination of incoming data.
Use
The port number is assigned to an application program. This specifies to which application program an incoming file from within the network must be sent, so that it can be read, opened, and editied.
Port numbers range from 0 to 65536. However, ports 0 to 1024 are reserved for special services.
Dependencies
Example
Well-known port numbers are port 25 for programs that forward e-mail, and port 80 for the HTTP service.
