Documentation
Definition
When a rollup is carried out, a line item is updated for each totals record created in the rollup ledger. The line item "defines" the totals record when using the drilldown function and allows the rollup run to be reversed.
Warning
Line item update increases the runtime significantly and is normally not necessary, since the desired result can usually be obtained by simply overwriting the existing values or by using a reset set.
Carefully read the online documentation for the "Cumulate values" and "Reset set" fields before activating line item update.
Line items are only useful if, for example, a long running rollup creates as large amount of data that will not be changed in a rollup ledger, and if a relatively small dataset is to be cumulated in the same rollup ledger with a second rollup, assuming you expect a second rollup, since follow-up postings will be made. In this case, you can reverse the data of the second rollup and carry out the rollup again. If no line items are kept, both rollups would have to be carried out again.
Another possible use of line item update is to take advantage of the documentation function using the so-called "rollup line item tables". These special tables keep the original information of the records rolled up in the data section. This allows you to display the original records using Report Writer drilldown reporting to access these line items. This is useful if you want the ability to see how the data was determined in a report created from rollup data. A detailed description of this function is described in the release note "Drilldown to Rollup Line Items in Release 3.0x".
Note
When using a reset set, "Overwrite values", or a reversal, the line items in the rollup ledger are deleted! Otherwise, the line items would not reconcile with the totals records.
