Definition

The mean absolute deviation (MAD) is the average forecast error expressed as an absolute number as opposed to a percentage.

The forecast error is the difference between the actual value and the value forecasted for the previous period. It can be positive or negative.

Procedure

The absolute forecast error is the amount of the forecast error. The system calculates this amount at the end of every period. It then takes the absolute forecast error and with the aid of the delta smoothing factor updates the mean absolute deviation in the material master record.

Use

The mean absolute deviation is a forecasting indicator. It is used to monitor the forecast model and to calculate safety stock.
