Documentation
Definition
Number that the system on which the transaction was performed has issued for this transaction.
Use
The external reference number does not have a controlling function in the SAP system. It is used for information purposes only.
Example 1, Goods movement without reference document
For example, sales transaction at an electronic cash register
A sales receipt is created and is assigned a number. In this case, this receipt number would be an external reference number. In the case of the receipt this would not be unique from the view of a superordinate system, however. The information Date/Store/POS would have to be added to the receipt number as well.
Example 2, Goods movement with reference document
For example, store goods receipt for purchase order
This external reference number can be a goods receipt/issue slip number. A goods receipt/issue slip number references a delivery note from the vendor or another external document that is entered at goods receipt to track the logistics merchandise chain (in this case only the first 10 characters can be used).
