Definition
The NPV of the currency translation contribution serves as a basis for the currency translation result, the transformation result, and for displaying the net interest income.
The currency translation contribution reflects the effect a change from the local currency to a foreign currency has on the transformation result, independent of the conditions agreed with the business partner and the maturity transformation. The currency translation contribution therefore only applies to alternative transactions. No currency translation contribution arises for transactions in local currency.
Use
The NPV of the currency translation contribution is calculated by comparing the NPV of the transaction based on the yield curve in transaction currency and the NPV of the transaction based on the yield curve in local currency.
Example
An asset-side transaction (loan) with the following conditions:
- Customer interest in foreign currency DEM: 6 % ,
- Opportunity interest in foreign currency DEM: 3 % ,
- Opportunity interest in local currency USD: 4 %
results in a negative currency translation contribution since the alternative transaction in foreign currency contributes 1% less to the transformation result.
