Use

The index at line item level is used by the inflation adjustment programs for open items in house currency (see example, inflation adjustments for accounts receivable).

If the index is missing from an open item, the item has either not been processed yet or the inflation adjustment is calculated using the index defined in the master record of the reconciliation account.
