Documentation
Definition
Commonly-used trading terms that comply with the standards established by the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC).
Use
This Incoterm is printed on the shipment papers if it is different from the specification made in the delivery.
Incoterms specify certain internationally recognized rules that the vendor and the buyer must adhere to for the shipping transaction to be successfully completed.
Example
If goods are sent via a port of shipment, the Incoterm in the order and in the delivery might be 'CIF New York'.
The bill of lading for the preliminary leg, however, should have the Incoterm 'FOB Rotterdam' instead.
In this case, the Incoterm 'FOB' must be specified in the shipment leg from the shipping point to Rotterdam.
