Definition

Idle-capacity cost variances cannot be calculated directly in the system. Instead, they can be derived from the volume variance and the fixed part of the output price variance if the following conditions are met:

  • For the activity, periodic activity prices were calculated on the basis of the capacity.
  • No actual price valuation in the actuals takes place.

If these conditions are met, the idle-capacity cost variance is calculated as follows:

Idle-capacity cost var. =
Volume variance + fixed output price variance
= Fixed planned costs x (1 - planned activity ÷ capacity)

You have two options for displaying the idle-capacity cost variance:

  • Variance calculation calculates volume variances and output price variances.

    In a report, these two variance categories can added together and shown as an idle-capacity cost variance.

  • The idle-capacity cost variance is the only variance category that can occur on the output side.

    In this case it is appropriate to switch off all variance categories of the output side in the variance variant except the remaining variance. The idle-capacity cost variance is then shown as the remaining variance.

Note that the variance variant can only be defined for the entire controlling area.
