In this IMG activity you define additional flow types for valuation. These are used under certain circumstances for one-step valuation, or when a two-step valuation involves special write-ups or write-downs.

One-Step Valuation

If you use the one-step valuation procedure for a security denominated in a foreign currency, you sometimes find that write-ups or write downs have arisen in both the security and forex components. If you want the valuation to be handled as a single activity so that the generated flow records appear as one item, for example in a general ledger account, you make the corresponding settings in this IMG activity.

If a write-up or write-down has arisen for both the security and forex components, and you run a one-step valuation, the system checks to see if settings have been made in this IMG activity.

  • If no settings have been made, the two flows are posted individually just as they would be if you were using a two-step valuation procedure.
  • If you have made settings in this IMG activity, both flows are posted to the same account. The account to which the flows are posted depends on which flow amount is higher. If the write-up or write-down amount for the security component is greater than that for the forex component, for example, both flows are posted to the write-up or write-down account for the security component. In this case, you would have to define additional adjustment flow types for the flow category XD (forex write-up/write-down) in this IMG activity. The system would then use the posting specifications balance sheet position to security write-down instead of balance sheet position to forex write-up.

Example

You have defined the following flow types and the corresponding account determination settings for valuation purposes:

  • Flow types for flow category XA (security write-up/write-down):
    • 8111 Security write-down
    • Posting specifications: 4.9.3.4: Security write-down to 1: Balance sheet position
    • 8112 Security write-up
    • Posting specifications: 1: Balance sheet position to 4.9.4.4: Security write-up
  • Flow types for flow category XD (forex write-up/write-down):
    • 8121 Forex write-down
    • Posting specifications: 4.9.3.2: Forex write-down to 1: Balance sheet position
    • 8122 Forex write-up
    • Posting specifications: 1: Balance sheet position to 4.9.4.2: Forex write-up
  • Flow types for flow category XG (write up/write down charges during valuation):
    • 8131 Write-down charges (valuation)
    • Posting specifications: 4.9.3.4: Security write-down to 1: Balance sheet position
    • 8132 Forex write-up
    • Posting specifications: 1: Balance sheet position to 4.9.4.4:Security write-up
  • Flow types for flow category XGF (write up/write down charges in forex component during valuation):
    • 8231 Write down forex charges (valuation)
    • Posting specifications: 4.9.3.2: Forex write-down to 1: Balance sheet position
    • 8232 Write up forex charges (valuation)
    • Posting specifications: 1: Balance sheet position to 4.9.4.2:Forex write-up

You have assigned these flow types to flow categories in the IMG activity Assign Flow Types to Flow Category.

When you execute one-step valuation, you get the following results:

  • Security write-down: 200
  • Forex write-up: 50
  • Since the capitalized costs are included, no charges are written up or down separately.

Under normal circumstances, the system would generate a flow of 200 with the flow type 8111: Security write-down and a flow of 50 with the flow type 8122: Forex write-up.

For one-step valuation, however, you want to post the net result to one account - the account for the largest item in the valuation. In this case, the write-down of 200 for the security component and the write-up of 50 for the forex component would both be posted to the account for security write-downs.

This is achieved by defining replacement (adjustment) flow types that carry the right account determination settings for the postings you require. You would assign these flow types in this IMG activity as follows:

  • Flow types for flow category XA (security write-up/write-down):

    Write-up/write-down (Wu/Wd) = "Assign flow type"

    • 8111 Security write-down
    • Posting specifications: 4.9.3.4: Security write-down to 1: Balance sheet position
    • 8112 Security write-up
    • Posting specifications: 1: Balance sheet position to 4.9.4.4: Security write-up

      Write-up/write-down (Wu/Wd) = "Assign adjustment flow type"

    • 8117 Adjustment record for security write-down
    • Posting specifications: 4.9.4.2: Forex write-up to 1: Balance sheet position
    • 8118 Adjustment record for security write-up
    • Posting specifications: 1: Balance sheet position to 4.9.3.2: Forex write-down
  • Flow types for flow category XD (forex write-up/write-down):

    Write-up/write-down (Wu/Wd) = "Assign flow type"

    • 8121 Forex write-down
    • Posting specifications: 4.9.3.2: Forex write-down to 1: Balance sheet position
    • 8122 Forex write-up
    • Posting specifications: 1: Balance sheet position to 4.9.4.2: Forex write-up

      Write-up/write-down (Wu/Wd) = "Assign adjustment flow type"

    • 8127 Adjustment record for forex write-down
    • Posting specifications: 4.9.4.4: Security write-up to 1: Balance sheet position
    • 8128 Adjustment record for forex write-up
    • Posting specifications: 1: Balance sheet position to 4.9.3.4: Security write-down
  • Flow types for flow category XG (write up/write down charges during valuation):

    Write-up/write-down (Wu/Wd) = "Assign flow type"

    • 8131 Write down charges (valuation)
    • Posting specifications: 4.9.3.4: Security write-down to 1: Balance sheet position
    • 8132 Write up charges (valuation)
    • Posting specifications: 1: Balance sheet position to 4.9.4.4: Security write-up

      Write-up/write-down (Wu/Wd) = "Assign adjustment flow type"

    • 8137 Adjustment record for writing down charges (valuation)
    • Posting specifications: 4.9.4.2: Forex write-up to 1: Balance sheet position
    • 8138 Adjustment record for writing up charges (valuation)
    • Posting specifications: 1: Balance sheet position to 4.9.3.2: Forex write-down
  • Flow types for flow category XGF (write up/write down charges in forex component during valuation):

    Write-up/write-down (Wu/Wd) = "Assign flow type"

    • 8231 Write down forex charges (valuation)
    • Posting specifications: 4.9.3.2: Forex write-down to 1: Balance sheet position
    • 8232 Write up forex charges (valuation)
    • Posting specifications: 1: Balance sheet position to 4.9.4.2: Forex write-up

      Write-up/write-down (Wu/Wd) = "Assign adjustment flow type"

    • 8237 Adjustment record for writing down forex charges (valuation)
    • Posting specifications: 4.9.4.4: Security write-up to 1: Balance sheet position
    • 8238 Adjustment record for writing up forex charges (valuation)
    • Posting specifications: 1: Balance sheet position to 4.9.3.4: Security write-down

In our example, the system uses the flow type 8128: Adjustment record for forex write-up (replacing flow type 8122: Security write-up) and the posting specifications balance sheet position to security write-down (replacing the posting specifications balance sheet position to forex write-up). This is because the flow type 8128 was assigned to flow category XD as an adjustment flow type.

The one-step valuation run in the example therefore generates the following flows:

  • 8111 Security write-down amounting to 200
  • 8128 Adjustment record for forex write-up amounting to 50

Requirements

Before you make the settings here, you must create the flow types you need in the IMG activity Define Flow Types and make the corresponding account determination settings in the IMG activity Define Account Determination.
