Cumulative overhead surcharge allows the surcharge rate applied to cost to be based on the year-to-date base rather than the periodic base. The calculation applies the current rate in the costing sheet to the YTD costs subtracting the OH surcharge in the prior periods.
For example, the cost in Period 1 was $1000 and in Period 2 it was $2000. Assume that the rate in Period 1 was 10%, so the OH surcharge in Period 1 was $1000 * 10% = $100.
Assume that the rate in Period 2 increased to 20%, so the cumulative OH surcharge should be ($1000 + $2000) * 20% - $100 = $500, which will be posted to period 2. With the non-cumulative overhead surcharge, period 2 will be posted $400 ($2000 * 20%) as the overhead surcharge.
Activities
Define costing sheet - the cumulative overhead surcharge applies to the costing sheet which is assigned to the cost object such as WBS or network activity.
Set the cumulative flag, if the cumulative overhead surcharge applies to the actual cost.
Set the plan flag, if the cumulative overhead surcharge applies to the planned costs.
Notes:
If you want the cumulative overhead surcharge to apply to both actual costs and planned costs, both flags have to be set on.
