Use

In this activity, you can deactivate product types. This means that the product type cannot be used in product maintenance and category and hierarchy maintenance.

If you are only working with materials, for example, you may want to deactivate the other product types. Certain product types may be delivered in an inactive state and have to be explicitly activated.
